India Proposes Stringent AI-Content Labelling Rules Amid Deepfake Concerns
Draft IT-Rules would force social media to label AI-generated content to curb deepfakes and misinformation.
The Indian IT Ministry has released draft amendments to its IT Rules, proposing mandatory labelling of AI-generated content to fight deepfakes and synthetic misinformation. Significant social media platforms would need to require user declarations on whether content is AI-generated, and apply visible markers or metadata on synthetic media. For images, labels must cover at least 10% of the visual area; for audio, the first 10% of the clip.
The rules also bar platforms from removing these identifiers. Feedback is being solicited by 6 November.
