World Bank reaffirms support for Bhutan’s 1,125 MW Dorjilung hydropower project

World Bank pledges support for Bhutan’s 1,125 MW Dorjilung hydropower project, mobilising multilateral investment for clean energy and jobs.
On 9 November 2025, the World Bank’s Vice President for South Asia completed a five‑day visit to Bhutan, where the institution pledged strong backing for the proposed 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydropower Project.
The project, to be developed under a public‑private partnership, is central to Bhutan’s strategy to boost clean‑energy exports, spur job creation and strengthen its fiscal resilience. The World Bank affirmed that it would mobilise resources across its institutions—IDA, IBRD and IFC—to accelerate investment, signalling growing focus on climate and infrastructure in South Asia.
The commitment comes as Bhutan moves to diversify away from hydropower‑only reliance and engage with global climate finance flows.
