NPCI International Payments and NTT DATA Japan signed an MoU to enable UPI acceptance across Japanese merchant networks, allowing Indian tourists to pay using their existing UPI apps. The collaboration supports instant QR-based payments and aims to expand acceptance in retail, travel, and transit corridors ahead of phased rollouts. Officials said the tie-up advances cross-border interoperability and promotes cashless adoption in Japan. Industry watchers expect initial merchant integrations in key tourist hubs, with scope for remittance and wallet partnerships later.
